i know! the beach is in my bathroom!

well, it's begun. ian is a mover and shaker now. he's finally remembered that he knows how to get off of his belly, but he rolls the same way that he rolled onto his belly, making it possible that he could just continue rolling right across the room. childproofing, here we come! we really haven't had to deal with childproofing for quite a while, so it'll be a pain to get used to those cabinet latches and gates again. sigh.

i was all set to write yesterday about ian's AWESOME sleep on thursday night (7:15pm-8am) and his great naps during the day yesterday, but no. last night was absolutely awful. he went to bed fine, then woke up around 12:30 to eat. fine. he didn't go back to sleep until 3:30. what is UP WITH THAT, ian?? part of the issue is that he's starting to actively dislike being swaddled, so that'll be going by the wayside very soon. we're giving it one more shot tonight, and that's it. i think 4 1/2 months is plenty long to be swaddled, and that he's probably right that he's ready.

abby has entered into the "why" phase of childhood. i enjoy all the whys, but it's definitely hard sometimes to come up with answers to questions like, "why are these daddy's hot wheels?" or answering this one for the millionth time, "but why are we going this way?" she's also become very big into using her "magination." which led to this conversation yesterday:

a--"those horses kind of look like cows to me"
m--"well, that's pretty silly, because they're horses"
a--"but i'm betending that they're cows! i'm using my magination! my magination's inside my head!"
m--"oh. okay."

...hopping down the bunny trail

well, hi! we've been busy these past few days. let's debrief, shall we?

sunday: we got up, finished packing and got everything and everyone loaded up in the car, and headed to church. we enjoyed the annual easter breakfast, although i had to bolt my food in order to get to bell choir rehearsal in time. so, bell choir rehearsal, then regular choir rehearsal, then the service. all went well. afterwards, i fed ian, and then we got on the road, although we did need to stop back home because i forgot a couple of things. got up to kimberly, and relaxed the rest of the day. ian was pretty sick with a cold, so he was miserable and didn't sleep well, so that was BAD. bad, bad night. around 4 in the morning, i decided that we would go home monday night instead of tuesday morning, because there was no way i could handle another night like that.

monday: brian was awesome and let me sleep for a while. got up, and we just pretty much hung out. had takeout from koreana for lunch (california roll and vegetable spring rolls), then we headed over to menasha. cory, hayden, and james showed up around 4:15 or so, and then we had dinner. around 6:30 we were on the road back home. ian slept the whole way home, but abby didn't sleep at all. so, she was pretty tired by the time we got home around 8:30, and slept till 9 this morning.

so, that was our easter weekend. not particularly relaxing, thanks to mr. phlegm monster ian, but it could have been worse.

this afternoon, ian had his 4-month checkup. he now weighs 16 pounds 1 ounce (76th percentile), is 25 1/2 inches long (75th percentile), and in the 80th percentile for his head circumference. that's the lowest percentile for head circumference that abby OR ian have ever had. :) and he's finally kicking this cold. he also got 3 shots that obviously he wasn't terribly pleased about, but was a happy boy the rest of the afternoon.

we've entered a new phase with abby: the sassy phase. i've seen it coming, but today it really hit. i told her to stop pushing on my leg, trying to get onto the recliner footrest while i was feeding ian, and she said, "no, YOU stop it!" sigh. i'm not ready for this.

22 March 2008

here comes the sun

so, we got about 5 or 6 inches of snow yesterday. happy spring, eh? i'm thinking it'll melt pretty quick, though...temps are supposed to warm up.

tomorrow we head up north for easter, so cross your fingers that all goes well. lots o' packing today, then we leave straight from church tomorrow morning. a full debriefing will be offered on tuesday afternoon or wednesday.

ian has his 4-month checkup tuesday afternoon, so i'm interested to see how he's growing. not looking forward to shots, though, as usual.

wow, this is boring. i'll stop now.

19 March 2008

if you can reach into the pack and play, that means you're a grownup!

scene: snuggling on the "big bed" while ian sleeps.

m--"what should we have for supper tonight?"
a--"um, a big bag of pancakes! the whole bag!"
m--"uh, no. we're not having pancakes tonight."
a--"pizza, macaroni, and tortellini! those are all in my head!"
m--"they're in your head? where?"
a--"all the way inside! i have food in my head because i'm the food girl! i tell people what to have for supper because i have food in my head!"

requests for dinner ideas should be emailed to foodinmyhead at foodgirl dot com.

phil spiderman

so, ian will be 4 months old tomorrow! in some ways, he seems much older than that, but in others he seems much younger. i don't quite know what to make of it.

current skillz: rolling over onto belly and then crying because he's forgotten how to roll off, making a wide variety of sounds, drooling all over himself and those around him, holding a toy and bringing it to his mouth, and jumping like crazy in the jumperoo. he'll also open his mouth wide if you make kissy noises (the better to drool on you).

goals for the month: remembering how to roll from his belly to his back, being able to hold toys for longer without dropping them, working on sitting up alone (abby sat alone at 5 1/2 months), being able to put himself to sleep for naps.

*****

in other news, grandma and grandpa rogers are coming to visit tomorrow. they haven't seen ian in person since christmas! it's a much different baby that they'll be seeing tomorrow. also, tomorrow is palm sunday, and abby will be processing with her palm tomorrow morning at church.

dispatches from the land of three

despite the issues we've been having parenting a three-year-old like miss abigail, she is at a pretty awesome age. here's why:

abby: "let me tell you a story, mommy."
me: "um, okay."
a (keep in mind, this is pretty much verbatim): "once upon a time. there was a bunch of friends. one day, they went to the beach. (pause) one day, there were more friends. one day, it was snowy so they put on more clothes. one day, it was raining so they put on more clothes. the end."

then yesterday we heard this little gem:
a: "once upon a time. there was a little boy named ian. one day, he rolled onto his tummy and liked the marching parade. then he stand up and runned away. the end."

i LOVE the storytelling phase. it's an awesome way to keep her busy, especially in the car. of course, it means that you have to take your turn telling stories too, and that's not my forte.

me: "once upon a time, there was a bunny rabbit named larry. larry didn't like being cold. one day, it snowed and larry hadn't seen snow before. he was afraid. but then his friend came over and showed him that snow is fun, and larry had a great time playing in the snow with his friend. the end."

see?

other cute thing: i'm putting abby to bed and giving her kisses, and she says, "put your hand up like this" in a high-five-like position, so i do, and then she rubs the palm of her hand on the palm of my hand and says quietly, "it's a hand kiss!"

all together now....awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

06 March 2008

let's find out for ourselves, shall we?

i'm SO trying this

can a plant be a friend?

so, i've moved on from movie quotes. i got bored with it, is the short explanation. now we're doing either quotes from "friends" (which i've been watching quite a lot of lately, thanks to mr. dvr) or random sentences. today's post title comes to you from sesame street.

so, ian rolled over from his back to his belly yesterday for the first time! he can now officially roll both ways; however, he does seem to have forgotten that he can get off his belly on his own, and prefers to lay there with his face buried in the blanket and cry. maybe that's more fun, i don't know. he's also gotten quite proficient with his jumperoo, and loves loves loves to jump. boy's going to have some serious leg muscles.

one year ago today, i called to schedule an ultrasound for potential ovarian cysts, since i was having some, um, feminine issues. after scheduling the ultrasound, i decided to take a pregnancy test, just to make sure there wasn't a more obvious reason for my issues. i had taken one less than 2 weeks previous, before heading to st. louis, and it was negative. so, not really thinking anything, i took another one and about had a stroke. without going into detail, it was extremely unlikely that i would be pregnant, so saying it was a huge surprise would be an understatement. i stood in the kitchen holding the test up to the light every which way because i was convinced that i was seeing things, and when i finally realized that yes, this was a positive pregnancy test, i cried and called brian at work, even though he would be home in a half-hour.

ian was on his way.

triops has three eyes

choice quotes from abby:

"i have a list of all the things i need to do outside! it's outside on my shovel."

"my banana tastes like corn on the cob!"

"i need to do lots of yelling and screaming outside."

"i don't like the news. you should turn it off."

"i'm going to dream all about your body. your glasses, your forehead, your eyebrows, your armpits, your toenails, and your hair."

and here's another earworm for you from abby's current fave cd:

sharing the earworm

ah, the joy of youtube: behold, one of abby's new favorite songs. also, it needs to be noted that we did not buy this new cd at wal-mart, as brian seems to think my last post implies. we purchased it from good old borders. now, behold our household earworm!

it's offensive to monkeys!

we've been moderately busy these past couple of days. the usual blend of errands and sitting around doing nothing.

exciting news flash! since yesterday we purchased a waterproof mattress pad, tonight abby will wear panties to bed for the very first time ever! not counting the time she put her pull-up on over her panties! this is very exciting for all of us. we still have a store of pull-ups in case of regression or in case of travel to places where there are no waterproof mattress pads, but i think she'll do well.

we went to super wal-mart yesterday. my hatred of wal-mart is not well-documented, but it's there. and it's strong. however, brian was there on sunday to get a new tire for the truck (long story which i will not tell because a) it's boring, and b) it makes me irritated) and saw that they had eight-dollar jeans! so, yesterday we headed there to purchase these eight-dollar jeans for him to replace the jeans with holes that he's been wearing. i also had a prescription to fill (which didn't get filled, another irritating story) and some random other purchases to make, so we decided to do all of that at super wal-mart. ugh. they did have underground parking, though, which was nice, and abby enjoyed riding the "moving stairs."

we've purchased a new cd...the new they might be giants kids' album, called "here come the 123's." it's a sequel to their previous kids' album called "here come the abc's." abby LOVES this new cd. she requests it all the time at home and in the car. i would totally recommend it for anyone with kids. the songs are catchy and not annoying (for the most part...i'm looking at YOU number 2 with your monkey puppet impersonating vintage elton john), and abby can even sing some of them. her favorites? "high five", "never go to work", and "zeros."

and we've reached another milestone with ian. i cut his finger with the fingernail clippers for the first time last night. sigh. it happens with pretty much every baby, no matter how careful you are. their fingers and nails are just SO SMALL! abby was younger than ian is when it happened to her, so i feel good i lasted this long. but, i didn't even get any of the nail. just finger. he cried, i cried, he bled, it was a mess. nice way to end this post, eh? :)
